Dear Writers and Readers,
Welcome to the new Areo Magazine community on Letter.
Since its launch in 2016, this magazine has provided a forum for calm, reasonable voices from across the political spectrum, with a universal liberal humanist slant. We have published eloquent, well reasoned articles by leftists, conservatives and libertarians and have often featured contrasting pairs of articles—both for and against Brexit and both advocating and condemning UBI, for example. While many of our writers are academics keen to discuss less technical topics and bring their thoughts to a wider audience than they could if they restricted themselves to journals in their disciplines, we have also included vivid and persuasive contributions by activists, artists, army veterans, students, filmmakers, counsellors, schoolteachers, parents and working people in a number of fields. Recent pieces have ranged from an exploration of game theory and a defence of liberal feminism to a review of Tiger King.
Areo is entirely made possible by you. The magazine’s sole source of income is our Patreon, funded by the contributions of regular readers. And, of course, without the superb submissions we receive from writers all over the world, the publication would not exist. The insights of our writers and the intellectual curiosity of our readers are the lifeblood of our magazine. Thank you!
This community page is a place for you to write to our editors, writers and readers.
You can discuss articles with their authors with more depth and nuance than is usually possible in a comments section: see, for example these conversations with Alexander Zubatov on his recent article on homeschooling.
This community provides a forum for writers, potential writers and readers to explore topics and flesh out ideas together. There’s a particularly good example of that in the correspondence between Areo writers Matt McManus and Jonathan Church here.
It also allows writers and readers to respond to each others’ arguments, as in this conversation between writers Sukhayl Niyazov and Galen Watts, on Galen’s recent piece on neoliberalism.
To become part of Areo’s virtual think tank at Letter:
— Click join on our home page.
— Write a response Letter to an article in Areo magazine, using the writer’s Letter address (see my bio below for an example or search for their name on www.letter.wiki).
— Write an Open Letter on a topic within Areo’s remit (a social, political, art or science-related issue of general interest).
— Write to an existing member of this community on a subject you know interests them.
— Reply to this letter and tell me what you think we should be talking about right now.
The best correspondences will be featured in a monthly round-up in Areo magazine and we will share them on our social media.
Yours with love,
Helen and Iona
I looked at it, clicked on a conversation. It’s two academics talking to each other trying to advance political points that they learned in their classes. I prefer the vox populi. Academics have a rough reputation in general, and anyone in the social sciences? Ecch…they do not produce replicable results.
